KatKin Cat Food Review: Why We Feed It to All Our Cats
If you’re wondering whether KatKin is worth it, this KatKin cat food review is based on our real experience feeding it exclusively for around six months to all of our cats here at Tyax Cats. In short, we have no complaints about the food itself; our cats genuinely love it, and we’re very happy with the quality for the price.
What is KatKin?
KatKin is a fresh cat food subscription made here in the UK. Instead of using generic “meat and animal derivatives”, every recipe is built around clearly named, high-meat ingredients like beef, turkey, lamb, pork, duck and fish, combined with added oils and a tailored vitamin–mineral mix. The food is gently cooked from 100% human-grade meat, then frozen to lock in freshness before it’s delivered to your door in daily-portion pouches.
The company designs a personalised meal plan for each cat based on age, weight, body condition and activity level, so in theory you’re not guessing portions – you’re feeding exactly what your individual cat is calculated to need in a day.
Our experience after 6 months
The short version: all of our cats love it.
They’ve happily eaten the full range of flavours we’ve tried.
We’ve seen lovely, healthy coats – shiny, soft fur across the board.
Their poos don’t smell too bad (never going to smell amazing, but definitely not awful).
One of the biggest positives for us is knowing exactly what we’re feeding. With KatKin’s pure ingredient lists, you can actually see and understand what’s going into your cat’s bowl, which can be surprisingly hard to find in the current market. Also, cats are carnivores, which seems to be forgotten in this day and age, so KatKin, with its high animal protein and low carbohydrates, is exactly what they have evolved to eat and digest.
What we love about KatKin
1. Pure, transparent ingredients
It’s a huge plus for us that the ingredients are clear and straightforward. We like knowing exactly what our cats are eating, and KatKin makes that easy.
From an ingredient point of view, KatKin is very different to most supermarket wet foods. There are no gains, cereals or plant fillers added to pad out the pouch, and all the meats are high percentages of named meats, so you aren’t getting any “meat and animal derivatives” that you do not know what they are in your food (we’re looking at you, Felix and Whiskas!).
2. Consistent quality
Pouch after pouch, the quality has been reliable. We’ve never had a pack where we’ve thought, “That doesn’t look right.”
3. The cats genuinely enjoy it
All of our cats have taken to it really well, and they are typically quite honest critics! We’ve rotated through different flavours and haven’t had any total refusals.
4. Coats, condition and overall health
Since feeding KatKin exclusively, we’ve noticed:
Shiny, healthy coats
Good overall body condition
No unpleasant change in digestion – including litter tray habits
5. Good value for what you get
Considering the ingredient quality and how well the cats do on it, we’re very happy with the overall value, especially feeding multiple cats.
Any downsides?
The only issue we’ve run into has been with packaging on a few occasions – and we really do mean a few.
Over the six months we’ve been using KatKin, we can count on one hand the number of times we’ve had a small leak from a packet when tearing the pack in half. It’s not been a big problem, but it’s worth mentioning as an honest niggle.
To be fair:
It’s rare, considering how many pouches we’ve gone through.
When it has happened, it’s been a minor mess rather than a major failure.
We haven’t had any concerns about the food itself – just the occasional little leak at the tear point.
Is KatKin worth it?
For us, the answer is yes.
As breeders, we always come back to two questions: is this diet biologically appropriate for a strict carnivore, and does it keep our cats in excellent condition over time? With KatKin, the answer has been yes on both counts. The combination of very high meat content, carefully balanced micronutrients and sensible portion control has given us glossy coats, good body condition, decent stool quality and enthusiastic eaters – which is ultimately what we’re looking for when we decide whether to keep a food in our rotation and recommend it to new kitten owners.
Based on both the formulation and how our own cats have done on it, we see KatKin working particularly well for:
Kittens and young adults who need dense, high-quality animal protein to grow properly (the recipes are complete for both kittens and adults when fed as directed).
Indoor cats who benefit from portion-controlled, high-moisture meals rather than grazing on dry food all day.
Fussy eaters, because the texture and smell of freshly cooked meat often goes down better than highly processed chunks in gravy.
Owners who want “done-for-you” feeding – the portioning and delivery makes it easy for busy homes or first-time cat owners to feed something high quality without having to design a diet from scratch.
For households on very tight budgets, or where freezer space is extremely limited, KatKin may not be the most practical option – it does sit at the premium end of the market and you do need to keep enough space free for a subscription box. For us, though, the convenience and the way our cats look and feel on it has made that trade-off worthwhile.
